Using AI to Draw Up Medical Reports: What AZ Oostende Teaches Us

AZ Oostende has deployed an AI that converts consultations into medical reports: one of the first Belgian hospitals to do so. The tool, developed by Cavell and Nexuzhealth, listens during the consultation and generates a draft. The doctor reviews, completes, and signs off. Patient consent is required. Audio is not stored.

Two lessons from a real deployment

1. A well-chosen business case creates exceptional value. Of course, governance must be done right: tested in a controlled environment first, consent before each use, no audio retention, the doctor remains responsible.

2. You cannot wait for a national or regional AI strategy to start. Meaningful AI deployment in your healthcare organization can start now. AZ Oostende proves it.

The governance gap

At the same time in July, the World Health Organization warned that only 8% of European countries have a healthcare-specific strategy to govern AI usage in the domain.
